Librarian

SUMMARY

Provides public services and direct assistance to library patrons in locating, retrieving, and using information.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Assists library patrons in using the automated catalog, online databases, and other computerized indexes to locate information available on-site or externally.

Assists library patrons in using equipment such as photocopier, microform reader-printer, computers, and audiovisual equipment.

Provides information literacy instruction to classes and other groups.

Works as a public services team member to process and coordinate interlibrary loans.

Oversees circulation and reserve functions.

Assists in the organization and order of reference and circulating materials, e.g., shelving and arrangement.

Assembles and arranges displays of books and other library materials.

Collects and maintains usage statistics.

Trains and supervises the Library Technical Assistant and assists in the training of student employees.

Assists in the evaluation and development of the library collection by recommending materials for purchase and withdrawal, including electronic information such as free-based online information service.

Works as a team member to assist in developing general library policy and other activities designed to evaluate, develop, and promote library services.

Cooperates as a team member in performing other duties as assigned by the Director of Library Services.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises Library Technical Assistant. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Master's degree in Library Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association required. Two years of library experience in public services; experience in the use of library automated systems; experience in the use of the Internet, OCLC, and online services are all preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general reports, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
