PURPOSE

To comply with applicable health codes and to reasonably accommodate the preference of both smoking and non-smoking employees, students and visitors.  This policy applies to all South Plains College employees, students and visitors at all College locations.  Policy at all College locations will be influenced by local ordinances and codes, if any, as well as other pertinent factors.

DEFINITIONS

A.  Smoking: Inhaling, exhaling, burning or carrying any lighted smoking materials including but not limited to cigars and cigarettes.

B. Prohibited Areas.  All indoor facility space at all campus locations including a 25 foot perimeter around all facility entrances, exits and HVAC air intake vents as well as all college owned vehicles.

POLICY

Smoking is not allowed in prohibited areas at all South Plains College locations and facilities.

PROCEDURE

The College respects the individual preferences of smoking and non-smoking employees, students and visitors.  When these preferences come in conflict, the College anticipates that the majority of instances will be resolved through a spirit of courtesy and cooperation.  When conflict involving employees can not be resolved through these means employees should seek resolution through their supervisory chain of command and may also enlist the Human Resources Office for assistance.  When conflict involving students or visitors can not be resolved through these means, the offices of the Dean of Students, Dean of Student Life, Associate Dean of Student Services at Reese, Director of the Plainview Center and Associate Dean of Work Force Development at the ATC may be contacted for assistance.  It is the shared responsibility of all employees to assist in maintaining a smoke free environment in and around all campus facilities entrances and exits. The college will maintain smoking receptacles in areas that conform to this policy.  Every effort will be made to provide these receptacles in areas that provide as much relief as possible from the elements.
