Programs of Study
The core curriculum program established by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board monitors the transfer of college-level credit among colleges and universities in Texas. Each institution is required to establish a core curriculum of at least 42 semester credit hours that fulfill the general education requirements of degree programs on the associate degree and baccalaureate degree levels. The core curriculum program at South Plains College focuses on enhancing the skills and competencies expected of students who receive the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees from the college or who transfer to complete baccalaureate degrees. These learning outcomes include, but are not necessarily limited to, the ability to:
- Communicate and collaborate effectively;
- Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to the real world;
- Demonstrate an understanding of visual and performing aesthetics and the creative process;
- Understand civic and personal responsibility in our global society;
- Use technology in personal endeavors.
South Plains College will implement new policies and requirements to its core curriculum starting fall 2014. The revision is part of a legislatively-mandated, statewide reconstruction of all core curriculums for public and private colleges and universities. Texas' Higher Education Coordinating Board approved the last revision to the state's higher education core curriculum in 1998.
South Plains College faculty members from several departments developed the initial fall 2014 revision for the core curriculum. Changes to the general education core classes will directly address and incorporate in course content the following:
- Communication Skills
- Critical Thinking Skills
- Empirical and Quantitative Competency
- Teamwork Skills
- Social Responsibility
- Personal Responsibility
