SPC Byron Martin ATC changes date for EKG Monitor Tech class
LUBBOCK – The start date for South Plains College’s EKG Monitor Tech class has changed. The class will start Feb. 4 and run through March 30. It will be offered in Room 141 at the SPC Byron Martin Technology Center located at 3201 Ave. Q.
The cost of the course is $385 for tuition and fees. Participants can earn 56 hours or 5.6 Continuing Education Units. A maximum of 20 students will be accepted. Rex Mosley will be the instructor.
This introductory course is designed for those who want to work in the health care industry in a more advanced position. A basic knowledge of hospital protocol and medical terminology is recommended but not required. This course includes fundamentals of the anatomy and physiology of the cardiac system, basic EKG procedures, interpretation of basic dysrhythmias and a brief look at treatment. This is a demanding course that requires an intense commitment to learning and understanding the complex concepts associated with the cardiac system.
Homework will be assigned on a daily basis. The practicum will be the last three days of class. Study guide materials written by the instructor will be available for purchase the first class night for $65. Instruction includes 32 hours of classroom time and 24 hours of practicum for which the students must provide name badges, lime green scrubs and a white lab coat.
Preregistration is required and students must provide a high school diploma or certified GED letter and proof of immunizations which include Hepatitis B Series, MMR since 1981, Tetanus no older that eight years, Varicella shot or proof of illness and a negative TB test no older than six months. A flu shot will be required of all students enrolled between Oct. 1 and March 31.
Also, students will not be allowed to register or pay for this class without all requirements being met. Criminal Background checks will be performed on all students. No refund will be given for criminal background checks.
