SPC recognizes outstanding students during commencement ceremony

LEVELLAND – South Plains College students Tausha Rosen of Lubbock and Brandon Campbell of Ropesville were named recipients of the Vera Sue and Thomas Spencer Awards for Outstanding Achievement at SPC’s 54th Commencement Ceremony on Friday (May 11) in Texan Dome.

Rosen served as The Plainsman Press Editor-in Chief. She received the Outstanding Achievement in Public Relations Award and multiple awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association including Critical Review, Editorial Cartoon, Editorial Writing and Advertisement Design. Rosen, a Public Relations major, is the daughter of Neal and Cheryl Rosen.

The Vera Sue Spencer Award is presented to a SPC female student who demonstrates the qualities of outstanding leadership and service to the college and community. The cash award was established by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Spencer in memory of their daughter, Vera Sue, who died while Dr. Spencer was president at SPC. The award was established by the Spencer Family 1971, and recipients are recognized each year at commencement.  A committee comprised of faculty and administrative personnel nominate and select the award recipient.

Campbell is a member of the Campus Ambassadors and a participant of the College Aerospace Scholars program at NASA. He is a Student Orientation Leader, a Mathematics Tutor, Who’s Who at South Plains College and a statistician for SPC Basketball. He was awarded the Outstanding Engineering Scholar. Campbell, a Petroleum Engineering major, is the son of Russell and Patti Campbell.

The Thomas Spencer Sr. Award is presented annually to an outstanding male student who demonstrates the qualities of leadership and service to the college and community. The late Dr. Thomas Spencer, Sr., played an important role in the formative years of South Plains College as its founding president. In recognition of his leadership at the college and later as president of the Texas Community College Association, the college established the Thomas Spencer Sr., award in 1998 in celebration for its 40th anniversary.  A committee comprised of faculty and administrative personnel nominate and select the award recipient.
