SPC Foundation honors donor, recipients at Scholarship Recognition Banquet

LEVELLAND – South Plains College and the South Plains College Foundation recently honored the donors/representatives of named endowed scholarships during the Scholarship Recognition Banquet held Thursday (Nov. 7) at the Mallet Event Center.

Julie Gerstenberger, Director of Development at SPC, served as the Master of Ceremonies.

The program featured McKaile Alexander, 2013 Scholarship Recipient, giving the invocation; Dr. Kelvin Sharp, President of South Plains College, recognizing special guests including members of the SPC Board of Regents, and members of the SPC Foundation Board of Directors, and members of the SPC Scholarship Committee; Mateo Grimaldo, 2013 Scholarship Recipient, providing thanks on behalf of all scholarship recipients and Brittany Hofstetter, 2013 Scholarship Recipient, introducing the keynote speaker.

The keynote address was delivered by 2013 SPC Distinguished Alumna Jamie Roney, R.N., B.S.N., C.C.R.N. Roney, a 1991 SPC graduate, is a Nurse Specialist, and Sepsis Coordinator at Covenant Health System in Lubbock.

Roney received an Associate of Applied Science in Associate Degree Nursing in May 1994 and Certificate of Proficiency in Vocational Nursing in 1991 from SPC. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Management in December 2001 from Clayton University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in December 2011 from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and a Master of Science in Leadership in Nursing Education in January 2012 from TTUHSC.

Roney served the United States as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves from 1987 through 2010 including activation and deployment in support of Operation Desert Storm, Joint Forge and Joint Endeavor. Much of Roney’s professional career has been spent working as a registered nurse in cardiac intensive care units and as a clinical educator at University Medical Center from 1998 to 2005, and Covenant Health System from 2005 to the present. In these positions, she has been responsible for professional development and clinical education of nurses working in cardiac intensive care units, cardiac catheterization units, and medical intensive care units. As a result, she has delivered numerous clinical presentations via Health.edu to viewers in all 50 states and around the world.

In her current position as nurse specialist and sepsis coordinator, Roney serves as a patient management resource. She provides key evidence and guidance in the care of the septic patients. Sepsis is a potentially deadly medical condition caused by a severe infection. Roney works closely with physicians, bedside nurses, case managers, pharmacists and administrators to help identify and provide evidence based treatment plans for patients in hospitals in Lubbock, Plainview and Levelland.

The South Plains College Foundation exists for the purpose of developing scholarship programs, supporting academic excellence, enhancing the educational program of the college and expanding college opportunities for the students of South Plains College. This year, the Foundation has awarded more than $590,000 to more than 700 students. This number represents a 10 percent increase compared to 2012.

For information on how you can become a part of the tradition of assisting SPC students, contact Gerstenberger at (806) 716-2020.
