SPC to host Camp Bluegrass July 15-20

LEVELLAND – South Plains College will host the 26th Annual Camp Bluegrass Sunday (July 15) through July 20. The six-day residential camp attracts bluegrass musicians from across the nation.

Camp Bluegrass 2012 will celebrate Bill Monroe’s 100th birthday year with a special week of activities dedicated to the Father of Bluegrass Music. Faculty includes former members of Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys – Roland White (guitar, 1967-1969), Robert Bowlin (fiddle, 1993-1996) and Jim Moratto (banjo, 1973-1974.) Faculty will devote class time to Monroe’s music.

Additional Monroe related events will include educational sessions at 4 p.m. in Tom T. Hall. On Monday (July 16), Joe Carr will present An Overview of Bill Monroe’s Career. On Tuesday (July 17), the faculty will present the Bill Monroe Story Session as well as a Monroe Tribute Concert at 7 p.m. On Wednesday (July 18), An Overview of the Monroe Mandolin Style will be presented by Carr, author of “Play Like a Legend: Bill Monroe Songs and Tunes for the Mandolin.” On Thursday (July 19), Bowlin will present Fiddle Tunes Bill Monroe Taught Me.

The camp is designed to improve individual skills of banjo, guitar and mandolin players. Also, classes will be provided for fiddle, Dobro, bass and vocals. Classes are conducted in the Commercial Music building with nightly faculty performances in the Tom T. Hall Production Studio.

Instructors for 2012 Camp Bluegrass are Bill Evans, Alan Munde and Jim Moratto, banjo; Tim May, Eliott Rogers and Dan Miller, guitar; Joe Carr, Steve Smith, Gerald Jones and Roland White, mandolin; Bowlin and Nate Lee, fiddle; Tim McCasland, Dobro; Jon Weisberger, bass; Dee Dee Wayland, vocals; and Wil Maring, songwriting.
