New CD to showcase student talent at SPC

LEVELLAND – On May 1, the Commercial Music Department at South Plains College will release a new student performance CD, the Creative Arts Experience, from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Tom T. Hall Production Studio. Songs from the CD will be played throughout the evening between acts of the Thursday Nite Showcase.

The CD features eight songs from all genres by the best vocalists, musicians, sound technicians and song writers in the Creative Arts program. The CD will cost $10, and T-shirts will cost $15. Proceeds from the sales will be used to fund scholarships and performance trips for the ensembles.

According to Wade McNutt, department coordinator, he was selected to focus on completing the task of producing the CD. Each May a new showcase CD will be released. The department currently is accepting submissions for next year’s CD.

“The great thing about this process is that when we have guest artists on campus, they may actually want to play on one of the songs or sing on a song and the students whose work is featured on the CD can go into an industry office and say ‘such and such played on my CD,’” McNutt said.

“This will give the students something to show industry professionals about their skills and experience,” he said.

For the past year, the instructors in the Commercial Music Department created an atmosphere of a working record label. Students interested in song writing, singing, performing, recording and mixing were encouraged to submit their best work for inclusion in the CD. For each song on the CD, an instructor was assigned to work as the producer to complete the song from the beginning stages to the finish product.

McNutt said everyone in the program will benefit from this experience.

In the future of the project, McNutt said he is looking to add video production through a partnership with SPC’s Radio, TV and film Department. Next year he said he wants to expand the CD to include 12 to 15 songs.

For more information, contact McNutt at (806) 716-2278.
