SPC’s Automotive Collision Repair Technology Program promotes equal gender opportunities

LEVELLAND – While some women prefer to pursue careers in the boardroom, classroom or the court room, there are those who choose a different path. Although they are not the first, and hopefully they will not be the last, two area women are pursuing their dreams of working in the Automotive Collision Repair Technology Program.

Lynsie Sanchez, a freshman from Lubbock, is a non-traditional student who recently came to college to get an education and career. She said she chose the Automotive Collision Repair Technology Program because she liked working with cars.

“I like working under the hood and repairing cars,” Sanchez said. “I also like the draw and paint, and this program allows me to do both.”

Sanchez said she chose South Plains College because of the stellar reputation the program has in the community. And, even though there were other females in the program before her, she hadn’t heard about any other girls. This is something she wants to change, Sanchez said.

Paired with classmate Breanna Guerrero, a sophomore from Lockney, the two want to encourage women to give the program a try. Guerrero said she is basically following in her father’s footsteps. She began watching and working with him as a child, and now she gets to create her own path. It also helps that Guerrero likes to get her hands dirty, she said.

“I think some women may believe that the guys won’t like having you here but that’s not the case,” she said. “As long as you do your work and show them that you can do things, they are fine to work with.”

Sanchez echoed the sentiment. “The guys in the class are great,” she said. “They treat you with respect and they’re very helpful – especially when it comes to lifting heavy stuff.”

Both women attribute their success to having confidence and trust in their abilities. The skills they are learning are performed equally, if not better, than their male classmates, they said. The duo also compliments their instructor, Bob Hotaling, for the hands-on training and support he provides them. Hotaling is the Program Coordinator and an instructor in Automotive Collision Repair Technology Program.

“I want to change girls’ minds that they can do this, too,” Sanchez said. “My Mom told me that girls’ don’t do this as a job but now, after what I’ve learned and how I’m doing, she’s proud of me. I can go out and do anything.”

Presently, both technicians plan to finish their academic quests. Sanchez is pursuing her Associate of Applied Science Degree in the program while Guerrero is nearing the completion of her Certificate of Proficiency. Sanchez said she will look to start her professional career in San Antonio and Guerrero will start close to home in Lubbock.
