    SPC’s Mass Communications Program wins 17 awards at TIPA convention

    LEVELLAND – Students in the Mass Communications Program at South Plains College came away with 17 awards after attending the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association spring competition and convention held April 10-12 at the El Tropicano Hotel in San Antonio.

    Geoffrey Nauert, broadcast journalism major from Lubbock, garnered one of those awards during the live on-site competitions on April 10. He placed third overall in a live Television Sports Writing contest while competing against journalism students from two-year colleges and four-year universities. Also, Nauert earned Honorable Mention recognition in live Radio Announcing.

    There were 517 participants representing 47 colleges and universities attending this year’s convention. TIPA is the largest student press association in the nation.

    In the competition for Previously Published Material, current and former members of The Plainsman Press staff received 15 awards. Among those was a second place award in the category of Overall Excellence. The Plainsman Press staff also placed third for In-Depth Reporting for a multi-part series on Gun Control and received Honorable Mention recognition for Headline Writing.

    Also, Sierra Taylor, sophomore photojournalism major from Pampa, and Caitlin Welborn, sophomore print journalism major from Wolfforth, placed first in the category of Picture Story for a feature story and photos on “The Color Run.” Taylor also placed second in the category of Ad Design for an ad she crafted using Ryan Gosling’s image.

    Jordan Irvine, currently a senior at Texas Tech University majoring in Electronic Media and Communications, placed third in the category of Sports Feature Story for a story he wrote on former NFL standout and Vietnam veteran Rocky Bleier.

    Jayme Lozano, sophomore print journalism major from Levelland, placed third in the category of Feature Story for a feature she wrote on a survivor of the Columbine school shootings. The current editor-in-chief also received Honorable Mention recognition in the category of Critical Review for a review on a Blue October concert.

    Zach Hollingsworth, sophomore print journalism from Lubbock, placed third in the category of General Column for a review he wrote on the “Breaking Bad” television series. He also received Honorable Mention recognition in the category of News Feature Story for a news feature story he wrote on journalist Bob Woodward.

    Also, Megan Perez, sophomore print journalism major from Shallowater, received an Honorable Mention award in the category of Critical Review for her review of a Switchfoot concert. Randi Adams, sophomore print journalism major from Lubbock, received an Honorable Mention Award in the category of News Story, while Aaron Gregg, sophomore print journalism major from Levelland, received an Honorable Mention Award in the category of General Column for a video game review.

    Allison Terry, sophomore photojournalism major from Lubbock, received an Honorable Mention Award in the category of News Photo, while Brandon Alvarado, former photojournalism major from Seminole, received an Honorable Mention Award in the category of Sports Action Photo.

    Students participating in the trip and competing in live contests included Lozano, who competed in Editorial Writing; Taylor, who competed in Feature Photography; Hollingsworth, who competed in News Writing; Gregg, who competed in Critical Review; Terry, who competed in News Photography; Welborn, who competed in Feature Writing; Josh Hamilton, sophomore radio, television and film major from Ruidoso, N.M., competed in Headline Writing; Devin Reyna, freshman photojournalism major from Anton who competed in Sports Action Photography; Nicole Trugillo, freshman print journalism major from Amherst who competed in Newspaper Design; Jenny Garza, a sophomore print journalism major from Lubbock, who competed in Copy Editing; Georges Nader, sophomore broadcast journalism major from Qatar who competed in TV Announcing; and Ashleigh Wolbrueck, sophomore photojournalism major from Dallas, and Skylar Hernandez, freshman photojournalism major from Santo, who competed in Two-Person Photo Essay.

    The students also attended workshops on various journalism topics during the two-day event in conjunction with the convention.
