SPC recognizes outstanding students during commencement ceremony

LEVELLAND – South Plains College students Neiba Jimenez of Abernathy and Cody Deardorff of Lubbock were named recipients of the Vera Sue and Thomas Spencer Awards for Outstanding Achievement at SPC’s 56th Commencement Ceremony on Friday (May 9) in Texan Dome.

JimenezJimenez was named to the President’s List for fall 2012, spring 2013 and fall 2013. She was named Outstanding Math and Engineering Student for 2014, a College Aerospace Scholar, a member of Science, Technology, Math and Engineering Club, co vice president of Phi Theta Kappa, a member of the Baptist Student Ministry, a math tutor, and a student recruiter for the Math Department, a Nelson Frederick Scholar; and a Top Ten Percent Scholar. She was selected by SPC faculty to participate in the Plains Bridges to The Baccalaureate Program at Texas Tech University, a 10-week undergraduate summer research program and she is an XCEL Energy STEM Scholarship recipient. Jimenez is a graduate of Abernathy High School and the daughter of Ramon and Maria Jimenez of Abernathy. She received an Associate of Science degree and plans to pursue her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science at Texas Tech.

The Vera Sue Spencer Award is presented to a SPC female student who demonstrates the qualities of outstanding leadership and service to the college and community. The cash award was established by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Spencer in memory of their daughter, Vera Sue, who died while Dr. Spencer was president at SPC. The award was established by the Spencer Family 1971, and recipients are recognized each year at commencement. A committee comprised of faculty and administrative personnel nominate and select the award recipient.

Deardorff was named to the Dean’s List for spring 2013 and fall 2013. He is the head manager of the Lady Texans Basketball team for 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. He is the Student Athletic Trainer for 2012-2013. For 2013-14, he is the Head Student Athletic Trainer for 2013-2014 for Rodeo, Track and Field, Men’s and Women’s Basketball. He is a graduate of Coronado High School and the son of Michael and Kathy Deardorff. He received an Associate of Science degree and will attend Texas Tech University to continue pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training while serving as a student traiDeardorffner for the Texas Tech Red Raider Football Team.

The Thomas Spencer Sr. Award is presented annually to an outstanding male student who demonstrates the qualities of leadership and service to the college and community. The late Dr. Thomas Spencer, Sr., played an important role in the formative years of South Plains College as its founding president. In recognition of his leadership at the college and later as president of the Texas Community College Association, the college established the Thomas Spencer Sr., award in 1998 in celebration of its 40th anniversary. A committee comprised of faculty and administrative personnel nominate and select the award recipient.
