SPC to honor 2014 Pacesetters at Scholarship Gala on March 1

LEVELLAND – South Plains College Foundation will honor three benefactors who have provided exemplary philanthropic support by naming them Pacesetters for 2014 during SPC’s 16th Annual Scholarship Gala on March 1.

South Plains College will recognize Al and Ida Blessen, Butch and Judy Bryant and the M.S. Doss Foundation. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and Gala events are slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex on the Levelland campus.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity to honor and acknowledge a distinguished group of benefactors who have provided exemplary support and leadership for South Plains College and the Foundation,” said Dr. Kelvin Sharp, president of South Plains College.

“These individuals and organization, through their philanthropy, have set the pace in supporting scholarship programs for SPC students,” he said. “We are so grateful for the support the foundation continues to receive from many donors.”

This is the 12th year the SPC Foundation has singled out benefactors to receive the Pacesetter Award. The award is granted by the Board of Directors of the SPC Foundation.

The Blessens are passionate about helping students. Al, beginning a scholarship endowment in 2008 and then, along with Ida, beginning a second endowment in 2011, have fully embraced the donor/student connection. Their support extends beyond the much-needed financial aspect and reaches into the also-needed emotional realm. They have created, nurtured and maintained relationships with their scholarship recipients.

The Bryants have been associated with South Plains College almost as long as there has BEEN a South Plains College. It is an honor that they have placed such a high priority on the College’s success and well-being for so many years. The Bryants are stalwarts of the Levelland and Hockley County communities as well.

The MS Doss Foundation is one of those rare supporters who sought out South Plains College and not the other way around; their initial gift in 2005 was unsolicited.  Since that generous and unexpected donation, the Foundation has continued to provide monetary support through additional unsolicited gifts. The members of the Board of Directors of the South Plains College Foundation work diligently to be good stewards of their generosity, knowing many students will benefit every year.

“The partnerships we have with these benefactors, and their generosity make a huge difference in the lives of South Plains College students,” said Dr. Sharp. “It will be a great honor to recognize these friends of the college for their support, and the vision they have to improve the lives of students.”
