SPC RECEIVES $5,000 GRANT TO FUND

    SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STEM MAJORS

LEVELLAND – South Plains College has been granted $5,000 from the Xcel Energy Foundation to fund impact scholarships for students majoring in the college’s pre-engineering program.

The grant will support the Xcel Energy Foundation’s educational initiative to increase the number of post-secondary students who major in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and graduate with degrees.

“We are so grateful to Xcel Energy for supporting a key initiative of South Plains College,” said Dr. Kelvin Sharp, SPC president. “Providing impact scholarships that create opportunities for first-generation college students to pursue a college degree is an important objective for our college. We appreciate the partnership we have with Xcel Energy to accomplish this task.”

Five students from the Mathematics and Engineering Department have been chosen by department faculty to receive the $1,000 scholarships. They include: Neiba Jimenez, pre-engineering major from Abernathy; Catherina Ramos, chemical engineering major from Lubbock; Mateo Grimaldo, petroleum engineering major from Ropesville; Marti Walker, petroleum engineering major from Dickens; and Denise Tarango, mathematics major from Plains.

“We are excited and proud to support South Plains College and these students by providing scholarships,” said Steve Deaton, Xcel Energy regional community manager. “We are glad we can support the region Xcel Energy serves.”

One of the goals of the grant proposal is to increase the diversity of students entering into STEM programs, including more women, said Julie Gerstenberger, director of development at SPC. “Four of the recipients are women, and all five recipients have plans to transfer to Texas Tech University or Texas A&M University to complete their engineering degrees,” she said.

Since 2007, South Plains College has received $27,500 from the Xcel Energy Foundation to fund scholarships in a variety of programs. This past year, the South Plains College Foundation raised $445,000 to fund impact scholarships for current and future SPC students.

For more information about supporting South Plains College students with impact scholarships, contact Gerstenberger at 806-716-2217 or email to jgerstenberger@southplainscollege.edu .
